It all started when Luna\u2014who has somehow acquired my streaming passwords (and no, I still don\u2019t know how)\u2014binge-watched Harry Potter <\/em>and<\/em> streamed it <\/em>for everyone. Two days later, my fanciest Halloween witch hat went missing. You know the one: black velvet, curled brim, feather plume, and a veil dramatic enough to make Morticia Addams weep. Here\u2019s the thing: the hat wasn\u2019t supposed<\/em> to work. It looked witchy, sure, but it wasn\u2019t magical.<\/p>\n\n

Or so I thought.<\/p>\n\n

Enter Lilith.<\/strong>
At some point between 2 a.m. zoomies and her mid-morning s\u00e9ance, she enchanted<\/em> the hat. No one asked her to. No one gave permission. She claims she \u201cjust wanted to see what would happen\u201d because after watching Harry Potter<\/em> \u201cthe energy felt right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

Suddenly, the hat was alive<\/em>. Not Disney-friendly-singing-hat alive\u2014no, this thing was opinionated<\/em>, judgmental, and deeply sarcastic.<\/p>\n\n

I found it in the living room, surrounded by five very determined cats. They weren\u2019t just playing dress-up. No, they were holding their own Sorting Ceremony.<\/p>\n\n

The Sorting: <\/strong>Results.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"– Charlotte:<\/strong> Hufflepuff. The gasp that left her could have cracked glass. \u201cWHAT<\/em>?!? Do I look like I churn butter and crochet socks for fun? I am a Slytherin, through and through<\/em>. I have schemes, I have power\u2014\u201d The hat just said, \u201c…you have snacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

– Ziggy Stardust:<\/strong> Slytherin. Ziggy, who once forgot how doors work, just blinked in slow, smug triumph. The hat purred, \u201cCunning is sometimes just doing nothing and letting everyone underestimate you.\u201d Charlotte nearly exploded. \u201cThe brain damaged<\/em> one gets to be the cunning villain?? What is this mockery?<\/p>\n

– Tartiflette:<\/strong> Gryffindor. Tarti is thrilled and now believes she\u2019s entitled to jump off anything higher than three feet \u201cin the name of bravery.\u201d In fact, she immediately jumped off the back of the couch yelling, \u201cFOR GLORY!\u201d and landed in the laundry basket.<\/p>\n

– Luna:<\/strong> Ravenclaw. Which is fair, no shock there\u2014she\u2019s the brains of this chaos and the one who started the whole Sorting revolution. She smirked, updated her clipboard, and muttered, \u201cFigures. I\u2019ll be in the library, losers.\u201d<\/p>\n

– Lilith:<\/strong> Refused to be sorted, citing \u201cancient magic\u201d and the need to remain neutral. \u201cI\u2019m the Sorting Hat\u2019s creator. I\u2019m above<\/em> Hogwarts politics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

The Fallout:<\/strong>
Ziggy and Tarti immediately staged a duel involving a spatula and a roll of paper towels. Charlotte accused Ziggy of \u201cdark magic\u201d (she just sat on her tail). Luna sighed so hard I swear the curtains moved. Charlotte tried to wrestle the hat away to \u201cforce a re-sort.\u201d Ziggy wrapped himself around it like it was the One Ring, hissing at anyone who got close. Tarti attempted to duel Ziggy again, this time with a ladle, yelling, \u201cExpelliarmus!\u201d Luna announced she was docking everyone points for general stupidity.<\/p>\n\n

\"\"Somehow, the hat kept talking<\/em> even when no one wore it, loudly remarking on their personal flaws and snack theft histories.<\/p>\n\n

By nightfall, Charlotte had locked herself in the bathroom with the hat and was attempting to bribe it with Dreamies to change her house. The hat refused. Ziggy lurked outside like a mafioso guarding his territory.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

By the time I rescued the hat, it was covered in cat fur, one feather was missing, and the veil had been chewed into something resembling avant-garde lace.<\/p>\n\n

Lilith just sat back and smiled.
When I confronted her, she simply said, \u201cPracticing for Halloween. You\u2019re welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
