The Agony of Being Me<\/h4>\n\n

By Charlotte, the Overcoat. Still not told. Still furious.<\/p>\n\n

It began, as all tragedies do, with salt.
Then pineapple.
And then\u2014then<\/em>\u2014the baby gremlin Tortilla Flat (known legally in my court filings as Tartimenace<\/strong>) accused me<\/em> of orchestrating it all. Me! As if I sit around whispering fruit-based conspiracies into her pointy ears.<\/p>\n\n

\"\"But of course, justice is dead in this household. Because just when I thought I could retreat to a corner to lick my wounds\u2014metaphorically<\/em>\u2014she breaks the sugar bowl.<\/strong> Then she breaks havoc.<\/em> Then she steals the frothing tip from the espresso machine<\/strong> and loses it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Do you understand<\/em> what that means?<\/p>\n\n

Iaia needs her cappuccinos.<\/strong>
Without them, she is a fragile husk of despair with wild hair and murder in her eyes.<\/p>\n\n

So what happens next?
The Amazonian man (the one with boxes, not swords, tragically) shows up with a new sugar bowl and<\/em> a new frothing tip. Willow erupts into thunderous protest\u2014because someone dared knock<\/em>\u2014and chaos reigns anew.<\/p>\n\n

And the cause of this maelstrom?<\/p>\n\n

Receives a TOY.<\/strong> A. TOY. FOX.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

She names him Bruno<\/strong>.
Which is idiotic, because\u2014say it with me now<\/em>\u2014we don\u2019t talk about Bruno.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Also? The hammock?
Smells like baby butt. I checked. You’re welcome. No one else around here seems to take olfactory security seriously.<\/p>\n\n

And all the while I, the actual overcoat of this household<\/strong>, receive nothing<\/em> but side-eyes and vague threats. (\u201cStill not telling her,\u201d mutters Iaia.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Telling me WHAT?<\/strong>
Did someone move my retirement cushion? Am I being replaced by a pillow with Wi-Fi? Has Chimpiflette officially been knighted in my place?<\/p>\n\n

Whatever it is, I know betrayal when I smell it. (I have smelled many things today. None of them comforting.)<\/p>\n\n

And just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse? They put me.
In a box. A box.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

AND TOOK ME TO THE VET.<\/strong> IN THE CAR.<\/strong> The rumbling chariot of doom<\/em>.A<\/p>\n\n

nd if that weren\u2019t traumatic enough? They put another box<\/em> in the car. With Tartimenace<\/strong> in it.
Oh yes, she was going to the vet too\u2014which I don\u2019t care about<\/em>\u2014but now we\u2019re in the same airspace<\/strong>, both boxed.<\/p>\n\n

And could I smack her? No. Because Iaia was there. With her \u201cbe nice\u201d<\/em> voice. And her \u201cthis is not the time to reenact Gladiator\u201d<\/em> expression.<\/p>\n\n

So I sat there. Silent. Seething. And what does Tortilla Flat say when we return?<\/p>\n\n

\u201cYAY! Today I vent for a walkie! It iz FUN!!\u201d
\u2014Tortilla Flat, gleeful, unrepentant, menace incarnate.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Meanwhile I\u2019ve aged six lives and am considering legally changing my name to Martyr von Misunderstood.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

I\u2019m invoking clause 12B of the Feline Charter of Dignity. I am lodging a formal complaint with the Ministry of Treats and Temperament.<\/p>\n\n

Because this? This is not a life. This is a mockery<\/strong> of what once was a regal, dignified existence.<\/p>\n\n
